Soviet Occupation of Poland - 1939/1941 Awarded a Vermeil at WESTPEX, San Francisco, CA, 2007. The time period of the Soviet occupation of Eastern Poland from September, 1939 to the Soviet expulsion by the Nazis in July of 1941 is an area that has been long neglected. This fascinating book details not only the general history but postal history of the introduction of Russian stamps and cancellers, the usage of provisional cancellations, mixed franking and across the boarder routings of mail. Maps are included, breaking down the geographic area into the Ukraine, Byelorussia and the Lwow district which was incorporated into Lithuania. The creation of philatelic material in certain areas is discussed and how to spot such material is explained. There is an interesting section on the creation of philatelic material to the detriment of the collector that is explored as well. Well illustrated, showing the rare provisional cancellations of the period, as well as the altered cancellations created by the Ukrainians. these cancellations were created in opposition to the Soviet wishes and were short lived. 78 pages.
